In the first part of our blog article, we took an in-depth look at the basics and initial findings of Capterra's digital accessibility research. We found that accessibility is not only an ethical imperative, but also a real business success factor. Now, in Part 2, we go even deeper. The study provides new and exciting insights into how companies in Germany are implementing accessibility, the hurdles they face and the role of modern technologies such as artificial intelligence.

What about accessibility in Germany?

According to the study, 79% of German companies already offer accessible features on their websites - a remarkably high figure by international standards. But what does this mean in practice? The most commonly used features are

- Adjustable font sizes (50%)

- Captions and transcripts for videos (49%)

- Keyboard navigation and screen reader compatibility (both 40%)

- Contrast adjustments (39%)

These features are essential to enable people with disabilities to access information and services. However, there is still much room for improvement: Only 33% of companies offer alt text for images, which makes the use of screen readers much more difficult.

Accessibility from business perspective

Accessibility not only has a social value, it also has an economic value. According to the Capterra study

- 68% of companies see more website visitors after implementing accessible features.

- 57% report increased sales as a result of reaching more people.

This clearly shows that investing in accessibility pays off. Companies that take action in this area not only reach new audiences, but also strengthen their brand image.

AI to help with implementation

An exciting aspect of the study is the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI). 47% of companies participating in the study use AI to implement accessibility features. Among other things, AI-based technologies help to automatically create subtitles, generate alt tags or optimise navigation elements. This makes implementation quicker and more efficient - a clear advantage for companies still in the transition phase.

The European Accessibility Act as a driver

The European Accessibility Act (EAA), which comes into force in 2025, is an additional driver for many companies. However, according to the study, only 36% of German companies are fully prepared for the requirements of the EAA. A further 42% are working on it, while 14% have no plans to adapt to the new requirements. For those companies that are still undecided, it is high time to take action - not only to avoid legal consequences, but also to remain competitive.

Key challenges

Despite the many benefits, the road to accessibility remains rocky. According to the Capterra study, the main problems are

- Technical barriers, especially for older sites that need to be modernised.

- Lack of awareness of the needs of disabled users.

- Cost and time, which are often overestimated.
